SMK Negeri 4 Surabaya is one of a state vocational high school in Surabaya. It can be said that SMKN 4 Surabaya is a favorite vocational high school besides SMKN 1 Surabaya, SMKN 5 Surabaya, and SMKN 9 Surabaya. In my opinion vocational high school is much better than senior high school. Why I can say like that, because in vocational high school the students are not only get a primary subjects such as Mathematics, Bahasa Indonesia, and English but also they are taught some skill that prepared for the students to face their future or to get a job after they graduate. For example is in SMKN 4 Surabaya has many departments such as accounting, secretary, guiding, selling, and the new one is multimedia. The most popular department in SMKN 4 Surabaya is multimedia and accounting. The skills subjects are taught more than other subjects. That’s not wrong at all, because as we all know that the name of the school it selves is vocational high school so of course they have a goal to prepare their students to get a job easily in the future by giving and teaching a skill. But the primary subjects are important too. The students have to study for it seriously because they will get it in their national exam. That is why SMKN 4 Surabaya gives the best teacher to teach in order to produce the best students too. Even the teachers are smart in their subjects that will be nothing if they can’t deliver their knowledge to their students’
Talk about English we will think that it’s a subject that is very important for all students. In SMKN 4 Surabaya the teacher of English subject can be said still need some improvement in their teaching skills. Why I can say like that, because I myself have ever felt it when I studied in SMKN 4 Surabaya. They still teach in an old style, old style here is an old method in teaching. For example they come to the class and then directly asking the students to open their book and do some exercise in that book. And then they just sitting down and do nothing. Sometimes they go out from the class and we don’t know what they do outside. After they come back they correct their student’s task by looking at the answer key without think weather the answer key is correct or not. Just imagine how if all of the teachers do the same things as they do, I’m perfectly sure that Indonesian education will not improve forever. But there are several English teachers that have a good skill in teaching with their own way. One of their ways is when they come in to the class they greet their students with a simple greeting but that can makes the students get interest to them. The next thing that they do is making a little conversation with the students as a warming up before they start the class. By doing that, I’m completely sure that the students will not get bored during the class. The next thing that they do is deliver a material from the book with fun way. They never take them all. They just take some and of course with the main topic of the book. After that they improve that topic become more interesting by combining it with some games that contain of the topic. Can you imagine that, the students will not ever get bored. They will love English. They will not hate English at all even some student that has no any ability in English. They will do respect in English. The teachers are not only ask the students to memorize grammar, verbs or other things about English tightly but also they make the students get relax in study English.
I have some advice for SMKN 4 Surabaya to make better selection for the teacher who wants to teach in SMKN 4 Surabaya. It will give a good impact for SMKN 4 Surabaya it selves, because by having a good teacher SMKN 4 Surabaya will produce a good students too.
